The 2004 Act, passed by Labour, has been central to exposing great injustices, such as MPs expenses.

Freedom of Information is under Tory attack as David Cameron bids to hush up establishment scandals.

The 2004 Act, passed by Labour , has been central to exposing great injustices.

It also shone a light on MPs’ expenses .

Yesterday, the terms of the act forced NHS trusts to reveal how much patients, families and carers are forking out in rip-off hospital parking charges.

FoI has been used to reveal that Prince Charles has been receiving confidential Cabinet papers and it has forced town halls to reveal lavish spending.

Up to £100million was splurged on credit cards with bills of more than £1,000 for “official” meals, champagne receptions and “networking events”.

It also uncovered that British pilots had joined airstrikes in Syria. Today it has been used to highlight Baroness D’Souza’s chauffeur bill.

FoI supporters say losing this vital tool would make it harder to hold the powerful to account.

But a Government commission is considering watering FoI down and charging for even simple requests.

Labour’s Deputy Leader Tom Watson said: “It’s time for the Government to accept the Act has been a success and confirm it will stay in its current form.”
