The sneaky Conservative campaign to replace Freedom of Information with Cameron’s law – his freedom to keep you in the dark – is a discreditable attempt to turn back the clock to an era when Prime Ministers, MPs, councillors, mandarins and health bosses were less accountable for terrible mistakes.
So, we applaud campaigning Labour MP and the party’s deputy leader, Tom Watson , and David Davis , a Conservative MP who thinks for himself, for spearheading a counter-campaign to introduce greater openness and fight Cameron’s dangerous power grab.
We suspected from the start Cameron’s spin about greater transparency and a new politics was Tory propaganda for the criminally gullible and so it has come to pass.
Freedom of Information was a great innovation of the last Labour government, probably saving money and lives by exposing waste and unsafe practices.
